Avery's Neuro Eval

Feeling better

On Monday night we headed to St. Louis for Avery's neurology appointment and EEG scheduled for Tuesday morning.  Avery went to her first Cardinals game Monday night also, but that is where the fun ended.  She began running a fever during the night and then she had a seizure.  We knew she had some seizures in China that is why we were getting a neurology consult, but this was the first one she has had since we met her.  We headed to St. Louis Children's ER, but they sent us back to the hotel since it was short and we already had an appointment in a few hours.  We went to her EEG and appointment with the neurologist and everything went well and she was acting like her normal self.  We headed out to get some lunch and she napped while we ate, but as we were getting ready to leave she had another seizure.  We headed back to children's and the nurse called to have us get a lab redone, because her calcium was low.  She had her third seizure while waiting to hear from the doctor. We then were taken to the ER and admitted.  They believe her calcium and the stress from a virus and ear infection are what caused these seizures.  We still are waiting for her calcium to come up to low normal so we can come home.  We still don't know exactly what is causing her calcium to be low, but they believe it might be a rare genetic mutation that causes the calcium sensors to be off.  That specific test has to be sent to Mayo to be done.  It has been a long week, but we are very grateful for the prayers and support from our family and friends!  Here a few pictures from this adventure.

Happy Easter!

We had a wonderful Easter celebration, starting off at church then on to lunch with our friends and family.  It was Avery's first Easter, so I was excited to get her all dressed up.  It was a beautiful day and the kids were able to play outside on the trampoline, play ball, swing and have an Easter egg hunt.

Carsen's Birthday!

A couple of weeks ago we celebrated Carsen's fourth birthday.  His theme was Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood.  He had a great time and for the first time was able to blow out some of his candles.  He also had a lot of balloons, which are his favorite!

Happy Birthday Avery!

Today we celebrated Avery's 3rd birthday, but first with us and first party for her.  She got to meet a few new people today as well.  She enjoyed all the attention and the food, of course.  She got lots of fun new toys, but she really wasn't into opening them.  We even got to enjoy some play time outside this afternoon, before the next (and hopefully last) round of winter weather that is forecast for us.

She is continuing to adjust well and grow in her attachment to us.  She is smiling more and she seems very comfortable at home.  We are both back to work and trying to settle into that routine.  Avery is scheduled to have her neurology eval on Tuesday in St. Louis, pending the weather.

Last Days in Guangzhou

Our last few days in Guangzhou were pretty calm and we really didn't do a whole lot.  On Sunday we went to the wholesale jewelry market and back to Shamian Island for some more shopping.  Then on Monday, January 13th we had our Consulate appointment to obtain Avery's visa for entry into the US.  On Tuesday afternoon we loaded up into a van and started our journey home.  We traveled by van into Hong Kong where we spent the night and headed to the airport the next day.  On Wednesday we began our 26 hour trek home.  We arrived home to Dexter around midnight on the 15th.  We were so happy to be home.  Everyone slept pretty well that first night home.

We have been staying pretty close to home the past week.  We made it to church on Sunday and Avery had her first doctor's appointment on Wednesday, complete with shots!  The shots made her feel pretty icky for the past day or so, but I believe she is on the mend now.  Here are some pics of our last days in Guangzhou.

Safari Park

Today we went to the Safari Park. It was really neat, but Carsen didn't really care for it. We rode a train through an area that had white tigers, elephants, lions, bears, camels, giraffes and many other animals. The were really close up. Carsen sort of enjoyed looking at the animals, when he wasn't covering his nose from the animal smell. He did the same thing at the fair, but I thought it was just a fluke then, but nope he has a sensitive nose! He got scared in some of the dark tunnels and stuff so we didn't get to see the pandas, but what we did see was really neat.

Official Adoption Day

On Tuesday, January 7th we returned to the Civil Affairs office to make Avery's adoption official. We had to promise to them that we would take care of her, provide for her needs and never abandon her. We signed a bunch of papers and that was it, she is officially Avery Gracyn Jones.

The past several days we have mostly just been hanging out and getting to know our new daughter and letting her get to know us. We went to the Guangdong medical clinic to have her medical examination done for her visa to the US. She had to have a blood draw for a TB test and this brought on the tears.

She is opening up to us more and we are seeing more of her true personality. She seems to be quite stubborn, used to getting her way and has not been told not much. She likes to latch on a an object and carry it around with her, but when its time to leave or someone else needs that object she does not want to give it up.
